Description

Fitting music: Cynthia Encounter Remix

I haven't had time to finish the dialogue today, so I'm posted this unfinished for now because I wanted to make sure I posted this today.  I'll update sometime tomorrow with the finished version and a longer description.  I dunno, maybe it works better without dialogue.

EDIT 12/24/2015: Well, I guess when I said "sometime tomorrow", I actually meant "two days from now".  And I'm sorry if this ends up in your inbox twice... stupid website glitched when I was trying to write out this description and I lost everything, but I don't know if it already sent out the update to your inbox.  Here's the alternate version without text, if you still want to see that.

So, why was I in such a rush to post this on December 22?  That's because it marked the two-year anniversary of having beaten the Elite Four and Champion of Pokemon: Platinum Version for the first time.  Ever since then, I wanted to do a comic adaptation of the scene as I imagined it playing out, even practicing for it two days later in GMod (so, I guess December 24 is still kind of a relevant date...?).  After all, I had promised this was coming in my previous Pokemon retrospective comic, Kirlia's Evolution.

Is there some artistic license involved in this comic adaptation?  Yes, of course.  For starters, Ares was still a Magmar at the time, not yet a Magmortar, but there are currently no Magmar models available for GMod.  Then, with the exception of Shinub/Piloshine/Mamoshine (who is depicted here as a normal Piloswine with a "shiny" TF2 Unusual effect because the shiny skin isn't currently available), I had not yet adopted the practice of nicknaming my A-Team mons, so Ares, Ace, and Gaius would have been known as simply Magmar, Staraptor, and Torterra at the time.  I also made a few guesses here and there, such as whether the Garchomp was using Dragon Rush or Giga Impact when it got burned by Ares or whether or not the Crunch really was a Critical Hit (but that's always fun to use for dramatic emphasis).

And, of course, it was Lucas (or "Frosam", as I named the player character) and Cynthia, not Scout and FemSpy.  Still, only a few decent Pokemon Trainer models are currently available for GMod, and Lucas and Cynthia are not among them (since neither of them appear in Smash, XY, or ORAS), so I made do with what I have.

Why did I use Crunch instead of a STAB move like Giga Drain or Earthquake?  I honestly don't remember.  Maybe it was because Gaius was still holding BlackGlasses from the previous fight against Lucian (even though a 20% boost isn't as good as a 50% STAB)?  Maybe it was because I was hoping that Crunch could lower the Garchomp's defense stat and make it all the more vulnerable to an Ice-type move?  Maybe it was because I forgot in the heat of the moment that Dragon/Ground-type mons aren't resistant to either Grass or Ground-type moves?  Or maybe it was because I was in such a heart-pounding panic that I selected a random move and hoped for the best.  Regardless, it somehow worked, and that's what matters.  Besides, Crunch would be easier to depict in GMod (just put Torterra's open mouth over Garchomp's neck or something) than Giga Drain or Earthquake.

I was unsure whether or not I wanted the Pokemon to speak in this comic.  If they did, then just before fainting, Ares would have said "Heh, burn."  I think, for now, trainer-centric comics (like this or "Kirlia's Evolution") won't have Pokemon speak, while mon-centric comics (like one idea I have for Ares and Galahad chatting, without any trainer nearby) will have them speak.

I'm mostly satisfied with how this comic came out.  The one problem is the complete lack of shadows on the floor.  Maybe it's because I used the Fog Editor to make the map darker?

Pokemon belongs to Game Freak and Nintendo.  Team Fortress 2 belongs to Valve.  Female Spy belongs to ChemicalAlia.  Garry's Mod belongs to Garry Newman.
