Literature Text

Darkness engulfs me
Surrounding me
All I know is
Dark nothingness
I need to get out
Get out
Out

A push through my shell
Like waves on water
I tear open my world
Blood and pain rains as
I claw my way out
Way out
Out

Light greets me, as does a woman
In destitute and starving, she points
Scornfully at me, a child horrified
By the wretched spawn of America
But I know too much now that I am out
Am out
Out

In my awakening, I have seen the light
And in the light, I have seen my awakening
Leave behind a torn world and a blood
Stain on the once-white cloth underneath
The light is blinding and I don't want to be out
Be out
Out

But there's no going back in
Canceled Checks provided the opening line. Worlds are Altered provided the closing line.

For this poem, Salvador Dali's "Birth of the New Man" provided the imagery. For those unfamiliar with this famous portrait, you can see it here.

If you notice, the lines in the first stanza are very short, but with each stanza, the lines get longer and longer. This is intended to represent the coming out of darkness and into the light, learning more and more as he sees and experiences more and more.

The last line is intentionally abrupt.
